Finke River Gorge National Park - 97 kms of fun 4x4

The track through this river gorge is some of the most fun 4x4 driving I have experienced on my journey so far.

With varied terrain: river rock, sand, river crossings and best of all set in a very picturesque river valley with permanent waterholes, trees surrounded by the red river gorge rocks.

There are ample warning signs at the start of the trail advising drivers to ensure they are in a high clearance 4x4, not suitable for towing, take sufficient self rescue gear, water etc etc.

Driving in

The 1st 22 kms to Boggy Hole will take you approx. 2.5-3hours to drive.

YES - 3 hours to drive 22kms... more or less

There are also ample spots to camp for the night along the way, even before the official bush camping site at Boggy Waterhole.

Travelling with friends Matt & Lu in 'Bobby' their Hilux we had a fun journey.

Bobby is a new vehicle for Matt and Lu and the track into both Palm Springs, the day before, and this track were a really good way to 'tune-in' to their vehicle and how it behaved, best speeds & how well their diff lockers worked.

Lu was driving and I think she enjoyed the challenge.

1st night's camping

Arriving at Boggy Hole we discovered a well formed bush camp site with ample level parking, shade from large mature trees and a large permanent waterhole to swim in (no crocs here).

The following day I continued on down the trail on my own while my friends turned back up to continue their journey north to Darwin.

2nd nights camping

My 2nd night I found this lovely camping spot and enjoyed the picturesque tranquility of the location. Back to traveling solo.

Sunset lighting up the colours of the rocks.

4th morning in the gorge

The terrain began to change as I neared the southern access point into the national park, with this waterhole being one of the last ones I spent time at before driving into more open landscape.

The birdlife at this spot was abundant, as you will see in the video below.

Is there a Video - YES, here it is:
