Jardine River National Park - Ussher Point

This is one side trip, that in my opinion was not necessarily worth the effort.

No, I didn't breakdown or get stuck

Yes, the views were gorgeous as you can see below

So why don't I recommend it.....

Information and Resources

Let me share with you some great information about Ussher Point and the Jardine River National Park

Where is it?

The road to Ussher Point is just north of the Jardine River Ferry and I headed out to the point after exploring the tip, while on my way back down the Cape.

The road out to the coast is only about 60kms long, but that 60kms took me 3 hours to drive!

The road out was a narrow single lane track cut into the national park, and for the most part did not allow you to see beyond the trees immediately lining the track.

Three hours of concentrating on a narrow road that alternated between corrugations, soft sand and bare rock, with trees often brushing up against the Landy.

While not entirely unpleasant, it also was rather mundane and not that much fun.

Super happy to reach the coast

I was super happy to finally reach the coast to see the ocean and a wide-open sky.

The tracks along the cliff tops were hard packed sand/dirt and easy to drive, but I chose not to venture on the soft deep sand of the beach access tracks.

Why not?

  • Soft sand

  • no other vehicles on a track that obviously did not get much traffic and

  • no cell cover

  • plus I really did not need to drive on the beach.

I decided it was safer to stay up on the hard packed sand, rather than risk being bogged in soft sand for potentially days or weeks!

I did enjoy seeing all these termite mounds on this wind-swept hill side - I am not sure why, but for some reason I did not expect to see them so close to the coast.

Curious to see what the track was like, check it out here in this little video

I was super happy to make it back out of the track, to re-join the road and continue my journey south, back down the Cape.
