Although I was initially disappointed by the scenery at the start of the Ormiston Pound walk and almost turned back, I was so pleased that I continued on. As you can see, it is stunning.
Ormiston Pound Walk
A 3-4 hour walk which initially winds up along the sides of a valley, then takes you to a high point in the track before you head over the other side of the bluffs into the 'pound'.
The scenery becomes more dramatic as you proceed along the trail.
Information on the area and walk:
3-4 hour loop walk
At the junction of section 9 & 10 on the Larapinta Trail.
The final part of the trail is 'undefined' but still relatively easy to find.
And there is a water crossing at the end. Water crossing through the very cold waters of the gorge.
Cold because the part of the gorge they lie in only sees the sun for a very short period each day.
One group of walkers I spoke to said they managed to cross the waterhole with water only up to their knees... Somehow the trail I took across the waterhole ended up with water almost up to my armpits!
Thankfully I had my camera bag held well above my head! And did I mention - it was very cold!
Once across the gorge, I chose to lengthen my walk by heading up the Ghost Gum track and was rewarded with stunning views back over the waterhole as shown below.
Yes in the image below those spots on the sand are people.
Do I recommend the Ormiston Pound walk - YES.
And to share the experience with you here are some moving pictures of the journey.
