Pimping my ride

In preparation for my return to my journey of exploration around Aussie I am 'researching' information about the new equipment I want to add to Lulu the Landy.

Boy racers 'pimp their ride' with things such as turbo chargers, fat or low profile wheels, body moldings, upgrades to their exhausts, suspension and of course LED lights glowing under their vehicles......

Of course when I think about pimping my ride, I am thinking about options for winches, spotlights, reversing spots, gullwing side windows, water tanks, extra fuel tanks...

So a pimped ride in my world is perhaps more like this:

Well, this one (to the left) is a little bit much, even I admit that.

But in all seriousness my list for my truck does include a few 'essential' things you can see on this extremely pimped ride.

Before I list my list... I want to say that one of the things I love most about being in Aussie is all the 4x4's and all the amazing options for pimping them.

I have a distinct memory from my time in Adelaide last year, when I walked out of the local Bunnings to see 5 sweet 4x4's all lined up in a row in the car park. Each one was well set up for 4x4 touring, each with different accessories and modifications.

The 4x4 shops are so prolific in Aussie, and so much FUN to wander through.

Gender-judgement

I remember years ago experiencing gender-judgement in a NZ motorbike shop when I was looking to buy a motorbike. That particular experience was so bad I walked out of that shop and bought a motorbike at a different shop where I was treated as a genuine buyer.

I admit I kind-of expected similar treatment the 1st few times I walked into 4x4 gear shops in Aussie, but no, I was treated well and wasn't judged by my gender, Very pleasant... and of course I spent money with them.

So, back to my list

I already have the following:

  • Snorkel

  • Bull bars

  • Roof rack - need to ditch current heavy steel one & replace with lightweight aluminum rack

  • Air compressor

  • Rear diff locker

  • Sand-dune flag

  • Sand/mud traction boards

  • Snatch strap & related self rescue equipment

The following are items I am considering that I might need

  • Winch

  • UHF radio

  • Spot lights

  • Reversing camera

  • Reversing spot

Now is the perfect time for me to 'research' brands, models, prices & of course in some instances I also need to take into consideration installation costs.

So many choices.

'Research' being youtube video's comparing various products & options.

There is a wealth of information out there and I enjoy the videos. I learn something from each one, even if it is learning what NOT to do!.

In fact learning from others videos is also why I want to share what I learn, give back to the amazing pool of free information available on the web.

Winch

They add a lot of weight to the vehicle and are not cheap, but the more I think about it the more I think that this is a no-brainer. I need a winch.

If I get stuck out in the middle of no-where by myself, having a winch might make all the difference to me being stuck or not-stuck. In trouble or not in trouble.

I found a great video article by 4X4 magazine comparing 7 of the most popular winch brands commonly available in Aussie... and from there I am looking into the top #1 & 2 from that review.

Click on the link above if you are looking for a winch and want to see the review.

Looking into those two winch brands has lead me to watching some fun videos such as this one:

Will my bullbars fit a winch?

I am not sure if the bullbars I currently have on the Landy will fit a winch/can be modified to take one. I really really hope they do.

Bullbars are NOT cheap, and as I already have bullbars I don't want to replace them.

My choice of winch therefore may be determined in part by which one will work with my current bullbar system and that is something I will not know until I get back to Aussie.

If you have an advice regarding winch options, please feel free to message me.
