Surf, stingrays, turtles & frogs covered in sand

Yuraygir National Park in New South Wales has it all.... what a great place to hang out, especially on a blue sky Christmas day with excellent surf rolling in.

Having spent the previous 3 weeks exploring mountainous rainforest covered national parks, dropping back down to the coast for Christmas & back into cellular cover was a great treat.

Yuraygir National Park protects the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline (60km) in NSW. Its located between Coffs Harbour and Yamba in New South Wales.

Camping

There are quite a few camping locations within the park. I enjoyed 2 nights camping at Station Creek camp ground:

  • loads of shelter

  • good access to the creek

  • stacks of free firewood

  • clean bush toilets

  • fire pits and

  • a lovely stroll to the ocean along a winding track through dunes and mixed vegetation.

Perfect wave for Christmas

Christmas day dawned bright & sunny, and I was up and heading to the beach for a 'dawny'.

As I didn't fancy carrying my stand-up board to the beach, I paddled it down the creek instead. The water in the creek alternates between crystal clear with high tide and a tannin-stained brown with the low tide, it is full of life with both tides.

Paddling out on crystal clear water of an in coming tide I enjoyed watching fish and stingrays swim about beneath me as I paddled on smooth-as-glass water following the meandering path of the creek out to the ocean.

Paddling down the creek I was pleased to hear the increasing sound of the waves breaking on the main beach. Getting to the beach early meant I had the waves at the main ocean beach all to myself. Well not quite all to myself if you count the turtle in the water with me.

After an hour or so surfing the main beach, I crossed over the creek and up the walking trails to Pebbly Beach - surfed another hour or so before I was simply too tired to surf anymore.

What an absolutely perfect way to spend the 1st half of Christmas day.

Join me here as I discover perfect surf (perfect for me that is) at Pebbly Beach

Frogs covered in sand

I have never seen a frog sitting in sand before and didn't know such a thing was possible.

So it was quite a surprise to discover the sand dunes teaming with sand covered frogs on sunset!

So many that I had to be careful where I stepped to avoid squishing one or more !

Do I recommend spending time in Yuraygir?

YES, very much so.

A few days relaxing here is time well spent.

I imagine the camp sites are very busy during peak season, so you may want to book well in advance of your visit.

Note: access to Pebbly Beach is done at (or near) low tide.

If you don't fancy getting your vehicle salty (as I didn't) then book into Station Creek caather than the Pebbly Beach site.
