The road to the Cape & back

Driving to Cape York is a journey in and of itself, even beyond the end destination of the Top of Australia.

It is a long bumpy road, and the novelty of the corrugations wears off very quickly!.

On the whole I love gravel/dirt tracks, but even I had to admit I was ready to see regular bitumen again by the time I had made it to the tip and back!

Planning your trip?

Planning a trip like this is almost as much fun as the trip itself.

There is a wealth of information online and these two sites were very useful in my planning.

The best thing I did was by the Hema map of Cape York, the paper version. In addition to being an excellent map it also provides information on the road conditions and warnings.

I will share my fun of driving the Telegraph Track and my experience of Pajinka (the tip) in my next posts... but for now, check out these roads !!

Meeting wonderful people

Once again the journey is memorable not just for the landscapes and adventures along the way, but for the people who will always remind me of my time on the Cape.

I joined several impromptu convoy's as I travelled up the Telegraph Track (Christopher and his party of travellers), was winched out of the Palm Creek exit by a super awesome couple (Kelvin & Jess) and met so many more along the way, including the famous GrizzlyNbear Overland explorers Leigh and Steph who shared insights and travel wisdom with me, awesome!

My vehicle may never be the same

Although I made the journey there and back without breaking anything, I fear I may never get the red dirt/dust out of my vehicle, I think I need to strip the interior and waterblast it!
