Wild, windy Wainuiomata Coast & Baring Head Lighthouse, New Zealand

Rather than sheltering from the wind and rain on a grey spring day, why not cycle to a lighthouse instead...?

Wainuiomata Coast is a scenic 50 min drive from Wellington and about 25 mins from Wainuiomata township.

The coastline looks and feels raw, rugged and remote, even though you are only 25-30 mins from town.

Access to the Remutaka Cycle Trail from the end of the road with ample parking.

  • Rocky shoreline

  • Kelp beds

  • Steep rocky hills

  • Stony stream and shallow lagoon

  • Sea birds wheeling overhead and

  • Locals making most of the quiet seas to hunt for crayfish and more.

Although not officially a freedom camping spot, there are ample places to park the night if you are self-contained and enjoy isolation, as I do.

The 3 min video below gives you a taste of the raw beauty of this coastline.

The scenery and trail would be stunning on a windless sunny day, but was still a worthwhile experience on a grey wet windy spring day that I enjoyed.
